For the past five years, I have been helping immigrants improve their English through one-on-one tutoring. My approach is highly personalized: I tailor each session and every practice assignment to meet the unique needs of the individual learner. I have gained ESL experience with several local organizations, including Redwood ESL, Upward Scholars, Palo Alto Adult School, Sequoia Adult School, Tutoria, and English Together. While most of my work is online, I frequently lead in-person evening ESL sessions at Palo Alto Adult School. I occasionally hold tutoring sessions on the Stanford campus.
Tutoring is my full-time job. This work evolved from my work as a life science entrepreneur, where my medical businesses measured DNA, and my environmental businesses measured water pollution. Those companies were fueled by the people who chose to build their lives in the United States, particularly in Silicon Valley. Our teams were comprised of lifelong Americans as well as immigrants from Latin America, China, Russia, and Vietnam. I've witnessed the tremendous value that immigrants bring to the United States, and working with such people energizes me.Â
My lifelong use of American English, combined with my education and business experience, provides a strong foundation for my ESL work. I live in Portola Valley with Susan, my wife of 50 years, our dog, and two cats. I had the good fortune of being born in the United States. By tutoring ESL, I can share that good fortune with those who are new to our country.
